I already have strong ideas of what I want to do in my kitchen, my upstairs bathroom, my bedroom, and the library.

But I need some input on the other three rooms on the main level of my new old house.

The main level is laid out in a unique way, with the dining room at the center. You have to walk through the dining room to get anywhere else, so it's important that the dining room color look good with everything I choose.

Here are some labels, for reference.

The dining room has a lovely chandelier, and I serendipitously found a bag of faceted prisms in a kitchen drawer that I'd like to use at some point.

In the dining room will go a round oak dining table with high-backed mission style chairs (the finish is like a cross between a walnut and a mahogany -- medium brown with a touch of red and gold). I also have a beautiful antique hutch that I bought at an estate sale for a ridiculously cheap price. (Awesome discovery: antiques in this area are about 1/6 of the price of vintage stuff on the East Coast.)

You can also see that the dining room has plenty of light from the surrounding rooms, but no windows of its own.

I want to paint the dining room a shade of brown that is not beige, not taupe, not mushroom, not mocha. Something a little richer than that, something warm. My thinking is that a brown will look cozy at family dinners, and will also not clash with my plans for any of the other rooms.

I need suggestions for the shade of brown. Brand of paint doesn't matter -- Benjamin Moore, Behr, Sherwin Williams, etc. I can get the color matched. Remember: warm, cozy, inviting, not beige. Something in the medium-dark range.

I know the library will be a viridian green.

I know that I just found a green and white floral club chair that I want to put in the living room. Leafy green on a white background.

I know that my couch is a camely-tan.

I know that it's cold here much of the year, and that I don't want any colors that are too icy or too tropical. With nine foot ceilings, huge windows, and hardwoods, I'm concerned that colors that are too pale will look washed out by the bright sun, and that colors with too much grey will be depressing in the winter. (The less depressing your house is, the better, I'm thinking? Yes?)

I know that I'm more comfortable with color in my home than the average person is. My studio would be blindingly bright for some of you.

I know that my favorite colors are blue-greens, green-blues, blue, green, brown, and pink.

What colors should I paint the living room and family room? I'm trying to think of the main level of my house as a colorway, with a medium/dark brown, viridian green, jade-ite green, and now I need two other colors that don't look too juvenile or ridiculous.

(I love purple with brown and green, but don't think I can do bright violet on the walls of my living room.)

The family room was an addition to the house -- perhaps in the 1980s. It needs some TYT = The Yarnista's Touch. I have no idea what that is, I just made it up. But the room definitely needs it.

Indoor cedar shingles. Interesting.

Should I paint the beadboard in here white? If so, what color should I put above it? Should I paint the ceiling beams magenta?

Just kidding.

For the main areas, a lovely soft yellow to bring the sunshine in on cold winter days. It will also go with every other color.

I looked at Sherwin-Williams colors. Here's what I like: Woodsy Brown or Polished Mahogany for the dining room; Fine Wine or Rookwood Dark Red for the living room; and either Eastlake Gold or Redbud for the family room (with white on the beadboard). Redbud would be lovely in the living room (as it's a smaller room) and nice with the club chair, but I'm not sure it would go with the camely-tan couch. If that would work (or if the couch is to be in the family room), then Redbud would be my first choice for the living room; if Redbud goes in the living room, then rookwood dark red would look great over white in the family room.
We have intense colors in most of our rooms, often over while, and we love it.

My suggestion for the dining room is Sherwin Williams 6360 Folksy Gold. I think you should not go too dark in the dining room because it does not have it's own windows, and the darker color will make the room look smaller and closed in. This Gold has warmth because of the gold tones, but there are overtones of pink. It is not dark, but it isn't all that light either. I matched it in a room that had one wall viridian green, another purple, and the ceiling pink, and it coordinates with those colors nicely. I hope you like it.

I won't have time to consider your other rooms (I'm sooo slow at these things, and so is my ancient laptop!) but wanted to clarify my previous choices and make one adjustment (which will be first)

With the Butterscotch color (don't have time to hunt a link for it now) I had paired BM#170, but found another color that works better as a contrast (IMO) and that would be #332 -

I believe the browns I've chosen, particularly the Peanut butter and Butterscotch, have just the right balance between light reflecting capabilities and saturation for a room such as your dining room. The two greeny shades could also help to provide balance and the connection to the other rooms surrounding this central point, and you have plenty of play with the horizontally divided walls. The light yellow tones work well as trim and will also help to draw more light in.

I'm gonna post this NOW as the clock is ticking down on me - yikes!

Yarnista I do have a couple of ideas but I don't have specific shades, since you're the best at that. My house is varying shades of sage green in the living space. It looks AMAZING with white baseboards, chair rail, wainscoting, etc. That being said, I suggest a sage green in one of the rooms (maybe that pretty shaped room with the wainscoting in it?)

That being said you can do a coffee shade on the bottom half of the dining room and an accenting green above it to tie in the rooms and still have your grounding brown.

Lately I've been loving how this sky blue has looked in my bedroom as well. It's bright and airy, also looks grean with white accents and I've got dark wood furniture with it and creams and leafy greens. I love that room. So any shade of sky blue should match your sage green and coffee brown.

It's too late for the competition but wanted to give some ideas. Not the colors you want but my mom painted our living room walls this way- one a red red color and the other three a white. The red wall was directly across from the one picture window in the room. Ahe added white curains and it was a really cool room in a time everyone was using avocados and gold.

Another idea is to paint a main wall one color, two "side" walls another less "radical" but different color, and the sunshine entering wall a white or lighter color. It looks neater than it sounds.

Your family room should be a shade of pink that you like. My sister did this in her lviingroom with dark furniture and it was lovely. She used a pastel pink with more dark pink added to a little more than a medium tone of pink. It is definitely pink. One of those rooms should be a pink of some kind because it looks so well with brown and it will brighten up the room.

Have at it and do what you want for sure because you have to live with it for a long time. Don't forget to ask the other residents of the house because they surprise you sometimes. Kids are esp. bold and think outside the box.

Forgot to say, wall paper with paint below or above is a neat combination. Can bring together several rooms colors and give a room some interest. I wouldn't suggest the flocked wallpaper although it was used in a lot of old houses. I lived in one house with red flocked with gold background in the bathroom when we moved in and it was interesting.

In that same 1896 house, there was a small window in my bedroom that had the prettiest old lace curtain. I loved that window with it's old history there. How about a lace curtain on that wavy window upstairs? You could make it.

Ralph Lauren Pioneer is a lovely warm brown..not yellow, not gray just nice..its on 3 walls in my living room. The trim I painted along with a lot of my house is painted Behr Popped Corn. Just enough of "something to make it look nice in both north and south rooms.

The blue/sea glass colour that goes with these..also in my mudroom with the Popped Corn is called Kitchen Ceiling Blue...its amazing and a little darker than a Robin's egg..and there is another darker colour that goes with it called..hmm I forget but there is a gallon of it in my mudroom. Its a darker version of the Blue...like the deep ocean aquamarine when it is almost opaque.

The house is lovely...

I think it has a good level of warmth in it.

Also, I think that bead board and wood plank paneling look really lovely treated in a traditional Scandinavian way. Of course, now that I am trying to find images of what I am thinking of, I am not finding much quickly, but what I am thinking of has sort of a lime waxed/white washed feel that brings out the wood, but is often in a light blue or green.

I know this is well past the deadline, but this color came to me this morning as perfect for your dining room. How about Cinnamon? Take a look at Benjamin Moore Cinnamon 2174-20. It's darker than I would pick, but I think it captures a lot of the qualities you say are important to you.

My suggestion for doing it right is to visit Ashley at the Sherwin Williams store on Hwy 53. We currently built a house and she was a life saver. I brought a little of everything (chair covers, carpet, cabinet color, quilts, stone samples, etc) and she matched everything for me with ease transitioning from room to room - to make sure nothing was a miss. She pulls out a box from the back room so you can look at samples in a 3x3 square instead of a swatch with 4 other colors. She's wonderful.

If you want expertise and great color knowledge, and you are looking to do it right - take a drive to see her. She makes it so easy!
