Look what I found.

cardinal1.jpg

Right outside the studio door, in a splotchy remnant of our Christmas snowfall.

I almost didn't pick it up, because it looked fake, and I realized that I had never before found a cardinal feather on the ground.

When I looked closely, I could see the imperfections.  The tiny places of asymmetry -- those were the most beautiful part.

Its irregularities made it real.

I can't bear to throw away this tiny, real, thing. Should I keep it in a special place? Should I set it free, like the feather in Forrest Gump?

Maybe there's a reason this little feather made its way to my door.

I'll think about it.

I think it is inspiration - for a new colorway.

It is the most beautiful red I have ever seen. I wouldn't part with it either. But if I was as talented as you are at making colors--I would copy it!

Wow, wow, wow. I can't imagine you not using that for some inspiration. It seems so brilliant. What a cool find!

How about the next month's colorway for the sock club? You could do a semi-solid in the male red cardinal (with some flecks of black and brown) and then the female companion colourway in the more muted browns. That would be lovely.

the contrast of a red cardinal against white snow is so beautiful! there must be a way to preserve feathers - maybe some fly fishing/fly tying sites have instructions...

I am a student of Traditional Witchcraft and can tell you that finding a feather in your path is considered a special gift. The fact that you have found a very, very rare Cardinal feather brings an awful lot of heft to the gift and message.

Cardinals and their feathers are considered to be very powerful when used in spells for healing, control over a situation and passionate feelings. Red itself is a strong, bold color that carries meanins itself.

Of course, considering your line of work and your love of color it would seem someone who may have passed away is giving you a wonderful "Hello" and honoring your artistic self with this beautiful, bold and memorable color.

I would tie it to a piece of wool and hang it somewhere. Its sure to bring a smile to your face again and again.
