Some things you may not know.

Here are some things you may not know.

1. I get very freckly in the summer time, despite my diligent application of SPF. This is very important information, please write it down.

frecklesarelucky.jpg

2. I do things last minute. I just got back from an 8:00 pm shopping trip to Target to purchase Valentine's Day cards for my children's classes. If the calendar is to be believed, that means I had four hours left before it was actually Valentine's Day. That could be an improvement over last year's performance.

3. I have a son. There's a lot of talk about girls 'round these parts, what with the logo you see in the upper left corner and all. But I do have a son who is tall and handsome with blonde hair and blue eyes.

mcmullen.jpg

4. My son will probably be at least 6'7" when he grows up. Everyone will want him to play sports.

5. I don't really like sports. I like knitting and other safe hobbies in which serious injury is unlikely. Hobbies like reading and baking molten chocolate cakes.  I think I will force my son to work for the family yarn business and become a pastry chef on the side.

Yes, that is what I will do. And he will live at home with me forever and clean the bathrooms and bake for me and rinse the yarn down at the studio.

6.  Both of my daughters have brown eyes. Sisters are the sweetest thing you've ever seen in your life, bar none. I recommend getting yourself a pair of sisters, if possible.

thesweetestthing.jpg

This is a toddler sister (whose arms bear the marks of her passion, drawing) entertaining a baby sister.  Better than Bravo reality TV, I'm telling you. It's better than The Real Housewives of Orange County, better than Top Chef, better than Project Runway.

7. My children all have different colored hair. Blonde, auburn, dark brown.  My mom finds this very remarkable and comments on it often.  My mom loves her grandbabies. I need some grandbabies, come to think of it.

8. This child will not let me brush her hair.  I swear she believes I am lighting her head on fire when I try to gently comb or brush it.  I've tried detanglers of every kind. It's not even so much the tangles, she just hates the feel of anything being done to her head. Any tips?

9. Soon, you will see a new blog design here at The Yarnista. It will have a wider center column so I can post larger pictures. My designer is a saint, she takes all of my scatterbrained ideas and makes a cohesive look out of them. And then she puts up with my endless, "What about this? How about that?" stuff that designers usually hate.

10. I am cooking dinner for the hubs tomorrow night. Here is the menu he's requested:

-- Steak

-- Sauteed mushrooms

-- Homemade biscuits

-- Caesar salad with homemade dressing and croutons

-- Bacon wrapped scallops

-- Peach cobbler

Certainly not the most cohesive menu. Certainly not the "I'll just whip up a chocolate dessert" kind of menu I was initially thinking of. But we've been together for 11 years and I love him and he deserves it. I did have to throw in the Caesar salad, because left to his own devices, he would never touch anything green, ever ever ever.

I have never made peach cobbler before, and peaches are not in season, so I think I'll be left using canned peaches. I guarantee you he'll think it's just as good.

11. I am almost done with my club colorway pictures for March. This is a fun month.

12. We'll be opening to new club members in March. If you've been pondering it and aren't currently on the waiting list, send us an email (threeirishgirls AT gmail DOT com), and we'll add you and notify you when a slot becomes available.

13. I have a fuzzy green bathrobe that my sister gave me for Christmas last year that I am wearing right now.

Good night from the land of snow and half plowed roads.

Cute kiddos! Happy Valentines Day, and hope your dinner turns out wonderful :)

In reference to number 8, just wait until she's at school and you have to check her hair for nits with one of those really fine metal combs! Then she'll know you were always being so gentle, and normal brushing won't even be noticed. (Or that's what happened in this house anyway.) ;)

Of course, by that time they're nearly ready to do their own hair quite often...

Your kiddos are adorable and I hope you show your son what you said about him living at home forever in about 5-10 years. You're always making me laugh Sharon, happy Valentine's Day!

Adorable kids! If you figure out hair combing without a battle, let me know. Neither of mine like having their hair combed.

your daughter sounds just like my daughter. The kicker is, she cries and screams when I brush her hair, but doesn't make a peep when my best friend does. I asked her about it one time - why she cries for me and not for H. Her reply? "H. loves me!" Yeah, that helped. LOL!

does your hairbrush hating daughter have any other sensory issues? maybe she really does have a sensitive scalp...
for Brennan, i cut the hair washing down to once/week and discovered, oddly enough, that his hair wasn't getting nearly as snarly. i also rinse out the shampoo (California Baby Tea Tree & Lavender) & conditioner (whatever is handy & i try to avoid using it now) with a vinegar/water rinse. gets rid of the stickiness that conditioner actually causes..
Brennan has a bunch of sensory things going on, so fighting over tangles & hair length (he doesn't want it cut. he's 9 & it's to his mid-back. i can cut bangs if i lead up to it by discussion for a month or so. it gets done maybe twice/year) is low on my radar. when he was younger he looked pretty messy, but he sometimes brushes his hair himself now!

My cousin's grand daughter was like that--horrible screaming. She is 13 now and keeps her hair neat all by herself. It may indeed be a sensory issue, and she needs to be encouraged to do it herself. Talk to the pediatrician next visit.

My 12 year old is growing like a weed. Size 13 feet! Sports are inevitable. Go for baseball. Avoid football.. Its cold sitting in the stands. :-) Oh and he sings like an angel. Love my football, baseball, basketball playing singer.

I am with Kathy. My niece is the same way... I used to be the only one who could brush her hair - and I would do it while she was distracted (eating usually). But now she is 11 and takes care of her own hair. I knew a grown woman who also hated to have people touch her hair (the hair dresser was agony to her - can you imagine?). I LOVE to have my hair brushed.

Will the clubs have unlimited space now? Or is this just a "we'll see" sort of thing?

February 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteremwall24

emwall, there will still be a limit to the club memberships -- we can only reasonably accommodate a certain number of people, even with additional help. :)

I'm currently on the club waitlist....my heart skipped a beat when I read new openings are coming. Wouldn't that be a fabulous Valentine's Day surprise, to get added to the actual list!

In regards to your darling daughter and her tangled hair, my daughter (5yr) is the same way. Has always deplored having anyone touch her hair. I foung two solutions that have worked really well: first, I comb her hair when she's sleeping. She sleeps like a rock and never even notices. Second, I bought her a very pretty hairbrush that fits her hand well and we added "brushing hair" to her daily job list. She enjoys doing it herself and although it's nowhere near perfect, it now gets brushed much more than if I were trying to do it for her. :-)

Cut it short. Dd was the same way, so my hairdresser gave her an adorable short cut, angled in the back. No more fights and she got SO many compliments on it.

Oh, your children are lovely! Honestly, I don't know how you get *anything* done - those cheeks on the babe are irresistible!

My 4 yo daughter hates hairbrushing and washing too. @Kim - great ideas! We've cut it shorter, which helps, but doing anything to it is a battle.

My daughter was the same way about getting her hair brushed. She has very thick straight hair and we would regularly battle over keeping it de-tangled. All this changed when her dance teacher recommended a "Mason-Pearson" brand brush. Yes they are expensive, but we have had hers for 10 years and it still works wonders.

Your children are so beautiful. I have a pair of sisters and we are a force to be reckoned with. Its like a giant pyjama party when we get together. I hope your girls grow up to enjoy each other as much as we do.

As a child, I was what is called round these parts [Liverpool, England] 'head-sore'.[ I still am and stick with one understanding hair stylist.] I can tell you that YOU may think you are being gentle, but us tender heads have a different definition of gentle, lol. One thing I tried with my granddaughter who has the same issue, is to make sure I held the hair closest her scalp as I was combing further down the hair length and that improved things partly - however, the thing that made it most bearable, was for me to sit on the floor behind her, with legs encircling and comb her hair gently, while she watched TV or played with a Rubix cube. When they are old enough to co-ordinate the operations involved in hair combing, let them do their own hair in exchange for you doing the final stage like a hairstylist does. It doesnt seem to hurt as much when they do it as they know what feels right for them. Make yourself comfy also and dont have any distractions because I found that my concentration would wonder and I was more likely to lean back and tug on the hair or drag her backwards slightly, if I stood up.If they cry out you feel tense because you care. Check most bedding particularly pillow covers are cotton and there is no static producing material in them. If you have the luxury of more time, try splitting the hair combing into two or three parts as a child minute lasts five times longer than an adult minute, lol. This worked for me, others may have some more ideas.

P.S Bribery also helps , lol.

Hey - that menu is too funny! If I didn't know better, I'd say my boyfriend is your husband! I read him your menu and he commenting that he could certainly drop by your house for dinner. Watch out fro strangers at your table!
