It's a good thing I have three children and a dog.
It's the only thing that keeps my house from looking like this:
I mean, really. If I were a woman who lived alone, I would have a sideboard, and this is what my sideboard would look like.
Covered with antique lamps and teacups.
It's a sickness.
I would own all of those lamps. And I would turn on a different one each night. And I would make myself tea, and I would use a different floofy flowered cup every day.
And I would eat cookies along with the tea and I would gain 100 pounds and I wouldn't fit in my clothes, but I would love looking at my teacup and lamp collection.
It's a trade off. Clothes or teacups.
Those mint green ruffle dishes? I covet them. I COVET them. Covet is not a strong enough word.
What is the universe trying to tell me here? That I should have been born in 1910?
That I have a sickness?
It can't be that I need a hobby. I have more hobbies than I can count, and can think of ten more hobbies I'd like to take up if I had time. So don't suggest that.
What?
I can't even stand it.
Stop.
The only thing that stops me from filling my house with floofy tchotchkes is the fact that I have three small children and a dog.
That, and the lack of a vast personal fortune.
P.S. Please forgive the camera phone pictures. I just happened upon these and couldn't resist.

OK - I am a single woman - no dogs, kids or husband (no vast personal fortune either...) -more hobbies that I can shake a stick at and AT THIS MOMENT am leaving for the ceramics studio to play with my new hobby - and yet I fill my house with beautiful hand dyed yarns and martini glasses. I think it IS a sickness, but am so glad there is no cure that I know of!!
Ohhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Where did all those porcelain come from?
You are not alone, my darling! My home would look like that as well if I didn't own a child, dogs and may I add, husband... who isn't really into frilly home decor.
We stopped into a shop like that while on vacation (to get some air conditioning for a few minutes) and my son commented that the owner must make all his money off of breakage. Everything was piled so precariously that you could barely breathe for fear of knocking something over.
I happened upon this treasure trove in a beautiful antique shop in Stillwater, MN. I would visit every day if it were near me.
I see a pretty spring colorway in those green ruffled dishes! Gorgeous!
When I brought my mother to live with me many years ago and her husband sold their home, the only thing I really wanted was her collection of mismatched tea cups that came out only when the girls came over to play Bridge. My stepfather had no idea that they were something I cherished and sold them in a garage sale. I was totally crushed and whenever I see a display like that I think of her and want to buy them all....but I stop myself because although they are all beautiful and I would cherish them for their own beauty, I can't replace the ones that were my Mom's.
That and I live with a husband, a son, a daughter-in-law,a Princess, two dogs and a cat....there is clearly no more room!!!
:)
I worked in a China shop/yarn shop..heaven. I own 7 sets of dishes. and love teacups. Never use any of them! But they are so pretty!
You know, if you lived alone you wouldn't need to worry about gaining all that weight. You could just sit around naked surrounded by your preciouses. Going out to acquire more would be an issue, I guess. ;)
I have my own set of floofy teacups and saucers on their way to me! They have been sitting in a box at my mom's since my Great Aunt Katherine died, and now Mom is moving, and so I get to find a place for them. In my house with a small child, two dogs and a teenager. I figure my china hutch is going to get filled to overflowing. You are welcome to visit, then we can all have tea from the floofy teacups!
Maybe just write them off as a business expense, as you probably need them as inspiration for naming future lines of yarn?
Just a thought.
BTW, I enjoyed meeting you very much at the Bobbin's Nest in Santa Clara. I have my Double Wedding Ring skein safely stashed and waiting for that special pattern (and a bit of spare time).
I love, love, love china, porcelain, plates, colored glass, clear glass and on and on and on. The 4th picture down would be a wonderful color combo for the yarn clubs. ;)
I would totally own all that stuff too, if I didn't live with 3 "men" who don't understand pretty stuff, and who prefer to litter every surface of our home with sticks, pinecones, and cut up bits of paper. But I will have you over for tea one day, and we can drink out of every one of the china tea cups in my collection.
Oh yeah, I'm there with you too sister, even the small chiildren and the dog, just add a couple of cats and its a circus.. oh wait, I have three cats too. Ok, but my weakness pre children was not only teacups but doilies...especially..of course..knitted ones. I'm a Niebling addict now making them into shawls.. 8-)
