TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!

I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.

We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.

Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!

Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.

Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.

Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries.  Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.

We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.

Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering.  Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.

Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now.  Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

The excitement and wonder on the faces of children -- and those of us wishing to be children again is the best part of December. The holidays have a special warmth and glow that we all hope will last. Peace on earth

Hot cocoa, Christmas cookies -- my favorite are the peanut butter kiss cookies my husband makes (peanut butter cookies with a Hershey's kiss smooshed on top as the cookies come out of the oven) that are totally ooey-gooey when eaten warm -- and of course snuggly under the covers with your honey trying to stay warm. Even in South Texas it often gets cold enough for that!

The best thing about December is all the possibilities it holds. Will it snow? What fun activity are we going to do? Eating gingerbread cookies. Cuddling under a blanket with some hot chocolate. Dancing feverishly at Christmas parties. Seeing all the new sparkly stuff at Pier One. Watching my baby eat his first gingerbread cookies. Making them with my oldest. Lots!

Simply put, the best thing about December for me is the ability to spend more time with my family. My work shuts down for 10 days, the kids are out of school.

The kids are excited to put up lights, set up the tree, and sing carols.

The best part of December for me are those first few snowy days. Those days when snow is still exciting and not yet an annoying hastle. I love waking up to a fresh layer of snow and letting the dogs out adn watching them play and wrestle in the snow! This december I can't wait for my 15 month old to be able to join in!
Thanks for the giveaway, I hope I win!!

The best thing about winter is curling up in front of the fireplace with some tea, and a large knitting project while the snow falls outside my balcony door. There's a stronger feeling of relaxation with snow falling softly and a cat curled up on my project.

My favorite thing about December is getting to see on an almost daily basis how charitable my young daughters are. They always want to give something, even if it's a dime they just picked up in the parking lot. Seeing them open presents is great, too, but just not nearly as cool as seeing them learning the joy of GIVING!

Beyond the holidays, for me, December signifies the beginning of the junior ski racing season. :) I hold many fond memories of crock pot lunches in ski lodges, the sharp bittersweet twinge of not winning but having done one's best, and the best part, seeing "seasonal" friends after a long summer and fall apart.

The best thing about December is the promise of Snow.... the drifting down of the soft snowflakes that turns even a busy city into a beautiful white place of beauty. And if you're lucky enough to live in the country you're enveloped in the peace of the white soft mounds of snow everywhere, the white coverings on the trees, the stillness that the first snowfall brings.

For me, December is about embracing opposites: darkness and cold outside, but also respite from cold inside. The most wonderful things to do in December are to catch the first snowflake, wear red, hand-knit mittens, run around outside in the woods and enjoy how you can see more of the sky because the leaves have fallen, and to look at how bright the stars seem when it's so cold at night. And then to return to a warm home and drink cocoa with someone you love!

I love the soft, watery quality of the light at this time of year. The soft pinks and peaches of the sunsets, the bare brown trees against the winter sky. I also love the special holiday cooking... tamales, latkes, gingerbread, pork and sauerkraut, black-eyed peas.... I'll celebrate whatever holiday tradition anyone is cooking for @;^)

To me the best thing about December is that everyone seems to be in a giving mood. No matter if it a great gift for family or friends or to your favorite cause.

December 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

The anticipation for holidays! What ever you celebrate, it's the idea that even in this cold dark month, there is something to look forward to.

A simple thing brings me great happiness - decorating my tree.

December 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

The best thing about December is that it is my oldest daughter's birth month. She will be 8 this year. She was the best Christmas present ever!

December 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

The best thing about December is the Christmas music. Absolutely love all kinds of Christmas music--both religious and secular.

December 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

I love that it becomes consistently colder out and really starts to feel like winter. I love drinking hot chocolate by the fire at night. I love the Christmas decorations around my house and around town. Most of all, I love that everyone is in good spirts and the general air of peace and genorousity that abound this time of year.

until recently, we lived in alaska. we loved it, it was amazing, and i miss it with every bone in my body. december in alaska is dark. very dark. i've always loved winter solstice, for many reasons, but while living in alaska, it became even more important to me. it's the shortest day of the year, the day it can't GET any darker. the thick blanket of white snow on the ground, reflecting the lights back up to the clouds.... there was just something so serene about it. the best part, though, was the anticipation. the next day would be just a little bit longer, then a little bit longer... you knew that, while there were still months of winter to look forward to, it wouldn't be long until we had the sun back. THAT is my favorite part of december, that turning point.

The best thing about December is that it makes you really appreciate sunlight. We take it for granted the rest of the year, but in December there is just not enough of it, so we grab every little bit. And got tea and hugs and cuddles, and curling up under a warm blanket with a good book.

Now that I don't have to work retail anymore I love Christmastime again! But so much yarn and so little time! Baking cookies, shopping for gifts that I'm not knitting, and knitting gifts (always start too late and each year I start earlier) so that I can get them out in time. And now that I've found Ravelry I spend a lot of time reading posts too! Now I just wish that the East Coast would get some snow! That would make it just perfect!

The best part about December is family. I am here Southern California, and my family is back in the midwest. Once a year, at Christmas, we get together and celebrate the season, and each other. To be honest, seeing my sister is what December is all about. Once a year is just not enough, but I will take what I can get!! May you all feel the joy of family this December.
