TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

The best thing about December is that it brings a sense of closure and we have a sense of renewal in January.
My favorite things about December are the time spent with family and all of the lights and decorations. It's a month filled with joy!
The best thing about December is the snow is still new and fresh and lovely... much nicer than the same stuff in February!
My favorite thing about December is drinking "hot booze", a concoction invented by my aunt. You take whatever booze you've got stashed away under the sink, add orange juice and spices...it changes everytime, and is super yummy.
The best thing about December is all the preparation and sense of anticipation for the holidays and new year to come.
My favorite thing about December is the cold crisp winter mornings in Memphis, TN. I watch the family of cardinals fly in and out of the bird feeder and back into the Cedar tree in my back yard. The bright crimson red of the Daddy and the golden yellow of the Mother as they sit on the other branches of a blue green cedar with the morning sun hitting them is a highlight of my morning. Don't you think a skein of yarn would be beautiful dies with this color comb!
December is best for: cozy fires, warm sweaters, and family time. Thanks for the chance to win some lovely yarn!
The best thing about December? I can knit at my son's hockey games and everybody around me understands why (unlike knitting at September football games).
Oh, and hot buttered rum. Sometimes I drink hot buttered rum in a thermos AND knit at hockey games (unlike drinking coffee and knitting at September...).
The best thing about December is seeing how my kids enjoy this month - and the fact that we have the oppurtunity just beeing together.
my favorite part of December is the warmth. Seeing my family, making cookies and decorating them, and that mad rush of knitting to finish presents in time to give them. Oh, and let's not forget mulled drinks (either cider or vin chaud) and the smell of cloves and cinnamon and oranges in the air. Warm and snuggly feelings in the cold or 'cold' as it is in Houston.
The absolutely most wonderful thing about December is that people are willing to get along and be good to one another. That's the best present a person could ask for, whatever the holiday you celebrate. Perfectness personified.
Coming in from a walk, with all the wonderful smells of woodsmoke and frost and fallen leaves in the brisk air, and curling up in front of a crackling fire with a good book and a cozy blanket and a warm drink. And yarn, of course. Lots of yarn.
The thing I love most about December is that we don't hate winter yet!! We love the first freeze, the first snow, breaking out the sweaters and the woolens. We love building our first fires, and sprucing our houses up for the holidays. We love the crowds, the lights, the sounds of the season; we wake up January 1st and start wishing for Spring :)
The best thing about December ... the secrets. I have presents stashed away for so many people who have no idea that they're going to get a gift. I currently live in Korea where Christmas is more of a couple holiday. My students and friends talk wistfully about western movies and their Christmas scenes, wishing they could have some of what they see on the television. Unbeknownst to them, I have lots of little Christmassy bags, filled with chocolates and handknit socks and toys and just waiting for the last-minute addition of some cookies. It all makes me giggle with delight.
The best thing about December is spending time with my kids. We have a great time decorating the tree, wrapping presents, playing in the snow and watching Christmas specials together. With all 3 kids in school all day, I treasure the extra family time December brings.
The best thing about December... Christmas Eve at my Grandmas. Homemade tamales, the Nativity play, and Grandma's girdle-buster dessert :)
The best part of December? Christmas, of course! Everything about it from shopping for gifts, putting up the tree, baking cooking, Christmas mass, going to see the lights at Seneca. Everything. It's even better if we get a dusting of snow around Christmas time, but even without it, it's a wonderful time of year.
The best thing about December is that my "baby" girl comes home from college for a few (too few) weeks.
The most wonderful thing about December is the smell of snow in the air. I open my front door dreading the cold air and instead am hit with the wonderful smell of crisp, snowy air. It may not even snow but the air smells like no other time of year and takes me back in time to wonderful memories of childhood and Christmas. It's the best part of December!!!
December 26th is the best thing - the madness of Christmas is finally over.
The best thing about December is SNOW! Right now I'm anticipating the snowfall that is forecast for us tonight, looking outside to see if it's started yet. I'm bundled up in fleece jammies and a blanket sipping a cup of tea, just waiting for the first flake.
My favorite part of December revolves around family. My sister's birthday is at the beginning of the month. And because we live away from my family, we always get to travel home at Christmas to see them.
Not matter which winter holiday you celebrate, there is something about all the holidays and the end of the year that causes me to slow down and consider what are the important things (always people!) in my life. If you can keep that feeling with you all year, hopefully it will bring a better year!
It is all about anticipation. Anticipating: creative decorating, once-a-year smells, once-a-year tastes, everyone's faces as they open their perfect gifts, the excitement of the children, wonderful leftovers, and even the last day of the month, December 31st, anticipating a wonderful year to come.
The best part of December is getting to see my family. We moved away from them almost 4 years ago and the trip back for Christmas is always tedious, but well worth it. I love the smell of the fresh pine tree in the house and the baking Christmas cookies! The laughter and joking. It hasn't been the same since my mom died, but we try to laugh and make the same jokes we did when she was alive. We talk about the good times that we had at Christmas with her and it's like she's there with us!
