TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

The best part of December is spending time with my family. My husband is home and my children get to spend a lot of time with him. Our house is happy and relaxed. This is our 3 years olds first Christmas where she really gets Santa so I am looking forward to Christmas morning.
The best part about December is the smells. Crisp winter air that often has the clean smell of rain. Home baked goodies prepared with love that fill the house. Pine needles, and cinnamon sticks that adorn decorations. Fragrant candles that are burned inside my during the dark evening hours of this month containing the Winter Solstice.

The best part about this time of year is all the time with family and friends. Parties, shopping with my sisters, lunch out with friends, decorating the house with the kids, baking with Mom, Christmas morning, singing carols, and being outside in the cold and sparkly snow.
The best thing about December is I can finally wear all the items I've knitted. I've lived in South Texas my whole life (all 31 yrs of it) and for about 2 months out of the whole year, it gets to be about 50 degrees. Well, to those of us that are used to wearing short sleeves and flip flops for 9 months, 50 degrees freezing! So this is the time I can show off my knitting either by wearing the items or giving them to loved ones (which is my personal favorite).
The absolute best thing about December is the way that the air gets cold and the days get short. And while you're walking around at dusk all the houses are lit up and you know they have their heat on and are warm and cozy inside.
That and the excuse to wear hand-knit hats, scarves, and gloves.
December is the month, my husband and I got married, now nearly eleven years ago! By that time we did not go on a honeymoon, but five years later we decided it was time to go to the island (Aruba) were my husband did spent his childhood. I had never been there and the culture was not known to me. Seeing him walking there, I saw a man as happy can be. Maybe also because of the climate, completely different of what I was used to in the 'cold' Netherlands. But also seeing Christmas trees in such a sunny weather gave a complete different feeling, absolutely no snow on the trees wherever. Coming home I absolutely needed a tree, but it was too late, sold out, everywhere. It was a boring time. The year after, we decided again to go back and again had a most wonderful time being together, but also mixed feelings seeing Christmas decorations in such a beautiful weather (and again no tree at home!). From that moment on things were changing. Each year the house gets fully decorated at our wedding day and we will have at least a week off, just enjoying each others company and do the things we like to do and having some special home-made dishes. I'm always looking forward to this time of the period, not just because of Christmas, but also because of the cozy time that will come!
I love waking up in the morning with a cold nose but snug and warm under the duvet and blankets, jumping out of bed as quickly as possible to open the curtains and seeing the world covered in a layer of sparkling crisp frost, diving back into the warmth of bed and considering telling the office I'm hibernating so that I can just stay in bed and look at the clouds skidding across the sky.
I miss the days of my childhood when December meant actual winter/snow. Living in Maryland, it is a lot less about snow...but really, December is full of wonder and sharing with my kids magical moments of no school and special treats, sprinklings of snow and making the most of it all before coming inside for hot chocolate. And appropriate weather to knit anything you want as warm as you want it to be...
The best thing about Christmas is the birth of my Savior, Jesus. My birthday also happens this month, of which my mom and I share the same birthday, Dec. 7. I love snow and winter is my favorite season. Christmas cookies, Christmas trees and Christmas eve service are some of my favorite things about Christmas.
The best thing about December is going into Christmas mode and working out my schedule to get everything done. I need serious deadlines to accomplish things, and 25 December works well to speed me along to completion on various works in progress.
the best thing about December is more time with family that I don't see much the rest of the year!! Love the big holiday gatherings. That and the cold weather that makes everyone want to stay inside and cuddle up w/ a good book or some knitting..... :-)
My favorite December moments happened on snowy nights when the snowflakes were fat and they muted sounds. The snow creaked under my feet, and little else could be heard. All around the warm, colorful lights of the holidays twinkled... I've moved to the pacific northwest, so these snowy nights are less common than when I lived in MN, but that just makes them even more magical.
My favorite thing about December is my son's birthday. He'll be one on the 15th. This month marks the completion of our family. My husband and I were always very certain that we only wanted 2 children, and so with the birth of our little Teddy, our foursome was complete (we have a 3.5 year old daughter). It just feels fitting with this joyous, family-centered time of year.
The best thing about December...I don't think I can choose just one! I love December because it brings my favorite season of the year. I love Christmas -- the lights, music, anticipation, wrapping gifts, decorating, good food (especially sweets) and the celebration of the birth of my Savior.
And my birthday's in December, too. :)
The best thing about December is Christmas with my daughter. The lights, the tree, the wrapping of presents, the knitting of presents.
My favorite thing about December is the joy I get from finding the perfect thing for each person I love.
I suppose you mean other than this giveaway - okay then, I will say Gingerbread. I think Gingerbread deserves much more of the year, but it seems in December people agree with me.
December: Cold Crisp mornings, football , time with family and friends!
The best thing about December is being with my family. The weather is cold and everyone wants to say inside and cuddle together.
I love December! I love the cold and the snow and the beautiful twinkling lights and the festive atmosphere. I welcome the opportunity to wear sweaters and coats and mittens. It's lovely to have time off to relax and knit and bake and drink hot chocolate. You didn't really think I could narrow it to just one thing did you?
The best part of THIS December is feeling this kid inside me kicking more and more every day. I can't believe it's been almost six years since I last did this.
Best thing about December? Short days and long cold nights which inspire a guilt free hedonistic lifestyle of constant fires in the fire place, knitted goodness and hot chocolate. Living in an area where minus 30 to 40 degrees celsius (-17 to - 40 degrees farenheit) is the norm not counting windchill, there is no better excuse to bundle up and get all cozy.
The best thing is that even though everyone is busy, stressed, etc... they seem to be in a chipper mood. People are smiling. Come January the festive lights come down and so do the festive moods!
One of the best parts for me are the memories. The 'Lifesaver Storybooks' that I see in the stores that my grandfather always bought my sister and I. The elf figurines that were Mimi's, my grandmother, that sit on the shelf holding N O E L or E L N O once my father or I get close to them. Helping my mother in the kitchen and stealing a piece of freshly sliced potato before it is added to the pot just like I always did as a child in her mother's kitchen when we went to visit for the holidays. Creating new memories for all the nieces and nephews that are now part of my family, having a large family gathering because of my husbands family since mine is smaller and much more spread out then it was years ago.
waiting for the first snow, pulling out all my hand-knits to wear, and being reminded of how freaking cold chicago can be...not to mention, the beautiful holiday decorations all over the city and hot spiced gluwein at the christkindlmarket!!
