TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!

I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.

We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.

Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!

Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.

Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.

Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries.  Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.

We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.

Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering.  Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.

My favorite thing about December is all the time with family. I do love the cold, and the pretty, fresh-fallen snow. But December holds two very special days (not even counting Christmas, which is also special)... the anniversary of our wedding, and my youngest, miracle child's birthday (which happens to be Christmas, too). December is mixed with joy and scary memories, but I think that makes it all the more special. No matter how busy I've been, when December rolls around, I stop often and remember the difficult days we went through together (my husband and I) when our baby was born - I remember the special people who were there as well and helped us through it - I remember the utter blessing of by baby's name "coming true" to its meaning (his name means "God will save"). And I remember how truly blessed I am - to have a loving husband, and three healthy children with him.

So much to choose from - Christmas cookies, the tree, lights, good cold knitting weather, more football, waiting for Deliciousness to arrive (though that could be '09only) - I really love December! If I win, though, my favorite thing will be 3IG giveaways!

The best thing about December is that usually the fall heatwaves are gone and we finally get some rain - like right now.
Since Hannukkah is approaching, the bakeries stock up on sufganiot, and we can stare at them through the shop windows standing in the cold trying to calculate the best time to eat that one doughnut we allow ourselves this season for maximum enjoyment (well, I do. Some friends of mine do. Others might allow themselves more!).
So really, the best thing about December is that it's winter, which means that the swealtering heat of the summer is gone so we can just enjoy the season and rain and warm food (latkes!) and wear sweaters and scarves and pretend it's not the middle of the desert here and knit without sweating on the needles.

How do you choose one "best" thing about December? The cooler temperatures is a real blessing here in Florida. The holidays of course, and time spent with family and friends. And I'm a December baby so I have to say my birthday too!

that first breath of really cold sharp air, that freezes you right through and makes you realize winter is just about here. the holidays are just about here. the snow is just about here. and all the smells and memories come flooding back, filling you up with joy, warming you against the cold and making you skip down the street like a child.

I have two favorite December activities. The first is baking. I love to bake all year long, but the holidays give me an excuse to try things I wouldn't make any other time of the year. Second, I love to pick out gifts for everyone on my list. It's a nice way to meditate on the things I love about each person. This year I'm knitting most of my gifts, making the whole process a months-long event. (I'm glad I'm doing this, but I may not do it again. It's a little insane.) (=

One thing? Causing everyone to gasp in awe as I go outdoors with a tshirt and sandals.

Hello, people, lower 20C's doesn't count as real winter...

December includes everything, great memories of childhood, The smelling of baking, candles, the Christmas decorations of the houses and it seems that even times are not so good around the world, people move a bit together...

The best thing about December is seeing family. My four sons are scattered all over the U.S. The second best is that I have time to play--to bake, decorate, do jigsaw puzzles, knit.

I love everything about December; yummy food, spending time with family and my kids working overtime to make sure their names are on the nice list. Even the snow is nice in December. I think it's because I'm not tired of shoveling it yet.

The best thing about December - is 2yrs ago on the 19th my little boy was born. xx

The best thing about December is Christmas--not the tradition of lights and presents and festivities, but the meaning of Christmas itself, the biggest present of all: Jesus' birth :)

Oh and from this year on December will be even more special because Dec 12th is going to be our anniversary date!

Both my husband and I get excited once the first day of December rolls around. We start planning Christmas decorating. He'll string lights and I will fuss with the trees (yes trees). I "finish up" (start in many cases) the Holiday Crafts and to top it off we usually have a Christmas party. Just a few friends to enjoy some eggnog and a few laughs. I think the whole process of the season excites me- and drives me crazy.

I love everything about December - the snow, baked goods, gatherings of friends and family, but my absolutely favourite thing about December is the Seafood Feast. On Christmas Eve my in-laws host a fantastic dinner composed of every kind of seafood imaginable. It's a tradition my father-in-law grew up with in Italy, though I'm sure they didn't eat the way we do now - lobster, shrimp, scallops, calamari, 4 or 5 kinds of fish, and several decadent desserts. It's like a foodie dream. Dinner takes hours to eat and there's lots of talking, arguing, laughter and rude jokes. Kids run around and play, occasionally asking for, "more chimp". It's my favourite night of the year. I can't wait!

The best thing about December is the first snow! Just got snow in PA this weekend and it was wonderful!

December 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

I love watching my kids get excited for the holidays -- brings back memories of this time of year when I was a kid. It seemed much more magical then.

All the food. Stuff that only comes out between November and December, and then goes back in the recipe vault, to use Yarnista terminology. Rum balls, shortbread, pumpkin pie, huge roasted turkeys, mincemeat, peppermint EVERYTHING!!

The best part about December is the day after Winter Solstice. This is when the days start to get longer and we make the march to SPRING! :)
In a close second is cookies. And egg nog. Mmmmm egg nog.

December 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMo

The best part of December is the Solstice. Even though it's the longest night, it's a great time for celebration because the Sun will start returning. Each day we'll get a little more sunlight, incremental gifts of light that lead to the great lusciousness that is Spring.

For me December is absolutely the Family month. Spending lots of quality time with my dear ones, having fun, playing games, eating together. Cold winter days, staying at home, with lots of candles around the fireplace giving it's wonderfull warmth and sharing the warmth of beeing together.

Finished by the last day of the year, looking back at not only the beautiful things of the past year, but also the sad parts, wishing to all my loved ones that the best day of 2009 will be the worst day of 2010 for them.

Christmas! Presents to give and receive. And then there is everything that goes with Christmas: baking, eating, decorating, eating, cold snowy weather and eating!

December 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRobin

My favorite thing, I don't have only one but many, it's the month I met my husband, the month we had our 4th child and of course it's THAT time of the year, we get to celebrate the whole month, I love that :)

Gosh, the best thing about this December or the best thing about December in general?

The best things about this December is that I got to go visit the studios of Martha Stewart - I'm a total fan girl so that was amazing!

The best thing about December in general? Parties? My husband's birthday? Christmas? Hanukkah? Presents? Nope! The food! I love holiday inspired food - I love making huge buffets and serving my food, with a heaping side of love, to all my friends and family! Cookie buffets, mounds of latkes, chocolate dipped home made marshmallows, traditional German cookies for my husband, Stollen, hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps, egg nog, spiced apple cider with a hint of rum, deep fried everything in honor of Hanukkah, red bean buns, candied cranberries, beer chili, all home made...all made with love...all to fill the hearts and bellies of my loved ones.

Oh yeah, I show love with food.

The best thing about December is all of the anticipation the new winter season brings. Fall is closing its doors and leaves you aching for that first crisp, release of chilling snow. When you feel that cold air reach your skin, it makes you want slide wool and wooden needles between your fingers. Then the real fun begins- knitting for the upcoming days ahead.

December 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeg Roke

The best thing about December is the start of dormancy which will bring the renewal of spring. It also brings time with friends and family. It also brings the reminder of many good years with my dear husband as this year we will have been married 37 years. And if the snow comes, like it has this year, it is the frosting on the ground and trees that makes it like a winter wonderland.
