TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

I love the fact that December is full of traditions. The baking that only happens once a year. The flurry of crafting gifts. Choosing a tree, and then decorating it and remembering all of the stories that are tied to each of the ornaments. New pajamas on Christmas eve. Driving around to look at the lights. Listening to the music. All the secrets that have to be kept to surprise loved ones with something special. All of those things are just as exciting to me now as they were when I was a child.
Hmmm...the best thing might be that my parents make a visit to see the rugrats. They don't come often and live too far for us to drive there easily, so it is nice for the rugrats to see their Nana and Pops. They just left yesterday :(
As for the gold colorway, you must call it Rhys! (LOL I will keep bugging you about a Rhys colorway, so you might as well get it over with huh? Hehe He is into gold things lately so, for me at least, it is fitting)
The best thing about December for me is knowing that we are guaranteed visits with family and friends. It seems like during the rest of the year we get so busy and it's hard to take time to plan those visits. But everything slows down in December and we get to just relax!
The best thing about December is the quiet coziness of staying in with a fire in the wood stove, with knitting in my hands. The best thing about December is seeing my whole family (2 sons, 3 grand daughters, 1 girlfriend) all together. The very best thing about December in Alaska is .... winter solstice! We have very little daylight now.
My favorite thing about December is also the Solstice. We put candles outside to encourage the sun to come back again.
My favorite thing about this time of year is that ~ once you wade through the consumerism ~ people seem a little kinder, a little more generous, a little more focused on the importance of family and friends.
The sense of anticipation. I love watching my children "waiting". They are waiting to put the tree up, waiting for the Christmas parties, waiting for winter break, etc. The excitement that goes along with that is contagious!
In December, something happens to the air in Colorado that seems to make the stars shine bright. So that even though it's dark when I'm on my way to work, I can still see them through the bus windows. Knitting by starlight is a blessed thing.
Reliving the traditions, some old, some new. Cutting down the Christmas tree, the Christmas Eve church service's last song of Silent Night, sung with everyone standing in a huge circle on the perimeter of the church with lights off and candles (singing a cappella, of course!), the community bonfire and singalong, experiencing the anticipation of Christmas morning through a 7 and 10 year old.
My favourite thing about December is the long nights. I love it when it is dark and cozy. Also it is a great time of year for heavy metal concerts
My favorite thing about December is definitely the end of the semester, a short winter break, time with loved ones, cozying up to the fire, and drinking tea. December is all about warmth, relaxation, and finally giving away the knitted gifts I've worked on all year long.
Oh, to chose what's the best thing about December?
It's really because it's the month of lights. That's what I love. Lights that brighten up the darkness that surrounds us - I leave for work in the morning in complete darkness, and arrive back home in darkness.
Lights that brighten up my home, from the star in my living room window to the advent candles, and the string of lights adorning the Christmas tree.
Lights that tell us that it's time for change! The turning of the heavens, and new beginnings.
Christmas! For one, we almost always spend it with family (the only time we didn't it was because we were far away and our youngest was only a month old), and I love spending time with family, especially now that I have a niece that I'd like to see grow up as much as possible. Also, it's so much fun now that we have kids, watching them see houses that are lit up, or helping us put up and decorate the tree, and especially opening presents!
(Snow is a close 2nd right now since we're in the DC area too, and our kids saw snow for the first time ever! Our oldest was 4 months old when we moved to Texas, and he's 4 years old now.)
The best thing about December is watching my childrens faces Christmas morning. The second best thing is getting to see family and friends that come in town.
The best thing about December is that despite all the hustle and bustle I get to spend time with the people who really matter- my friends and family. And the chance that maybe, just maybe it will snow :)
The best thing about December, in my opinion, is what it inspires.
It inspires magic and wonder with all that surrounds the holidays. I see my little girl's eyes light up with the glitter and lights, and with the hope that a certain large elf will remember her.
It inspires generosity that otherwise stays dormant. We reach out to others more, for whatever reason. No one wants anyone to be alone or without at this time of the year.
Sure, it brings craziness, stress, and a lot of other things, but it's what we make of it, and I look forward to it every year.
The best thing about December is the extra time I get to spend with friends and family. Winding up the end of the year, listening to Christmas music, reflecting on life's blessings, and drinking egg nog!!!
The best thing about December is how somehow, magically, everything seems to work out. Sure, I may be up until midnight baking cookies or dashing out on Christmas eve for yet another roll of that magically vanishing wrapping paper tape and we might all get snowed in, but by the time January first rolls around we're all able to look back and say "that was a good, fun month." Not a bad way to end the year, you know? (Having my birthday in there too doesn't hurt my holiday cheer a bit either.)
The best thing about December is Christmas. I love the true meaning of it. I love the decorations, the movies, the food, and I love selecting gifts for the people I adore, and those less fortunate than I am. I don't so much love the weather, (it's-28C here as I type this, that's-17F) but the snow and frost and Christmas lights are beautiful.
My favorite thing about December is that it is the end of the year. A time to look back over the year and be thankful for all the blessings you have received. A time to look forward to the beginning of a new year and the wonderful possibilities.
The best thing about December is that is brings friends and family together, continue childhood traditions and creating new memories.
The best thing about December is to be reunited with family at Christmas.
To breathe the cold coming, and to see the first snowfall.
To wrap up gifts and go choose the prettiest tree, that will smell so green in the house :)!
My favorite thing about december is winter break from school! I am a teacher and i love having time at home with my kids! My little ones give me so much to be thankful for everyday, but this time of year definitely makes me think about it more!
The best thing about December is hearing my 5 year old whisper to me "mommy, (whoever) doesn't do Santa Claus, either!"
My favourite thing about December is Christmas music. I'm not an especially religious person and I'm not sure that I even qualify as Christian, but Christmas music makes me so happy. It doesn't matter if it's traditional, modern, instrumental, vocal, whatever--I just love it.
My fiancé, not so much. But he's stuck with me now!
