TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

I work at a school, so my favorite thing about December is Winter Break!
I love snow in December because it's still new and exciting, unlike snow in February when I'm sick of it and there's grey slush everywhere.
But my very favorite part of December is getting to spend time with my family, cooking a big Christmas meal with my mom and my aunt, picking special gifts for my nieces, and just generally being happy to be together...
I have so many favorites. Watching the Christmas shows that come on tv, baking lots of fattening yummy things, eating the aforementioned fatty yummy treats, shopping for presents, watching my kids get excited when our fun, but oh so tacky inflatable yard decorations light up. Best of all has to be the anticipation and excitement of just waiting for Christmas to arrive. Oh and my Christmas present which is my 3IG SM renewal. I've been getting that for a few years now. It's kind of a tradition for me. A Christmas present of yarn every month, what could be better?
I'm having trouble choosing so I'm going to have to say more than one. The silly favorite is making monster cookies. It is the only time of the year I make them. Mmmm. I love music and there are so many special Christmas songs that I can hardly get my fill. Last but not least is the excitement and joy of my children.
Ohhh what yummy-licious yarn :)
Let me see, the best thing about December would probably be snuggling up all safe & warm inside with a mug out hot chocolate while watching giant fluffy snowflakes fall outside, knowing that I do not have to go out in it but can enjoy the scene from a safe & warm spot near the window :)
Being with family, playing in the snow and baking and frosting sugar cookies with the kids!
The best thing about December: the cold, crisp air against a bright blue sky with big puffy white clouds. A great reason to cook warming stews and drink hot chocolate!
the best thing about december is the overwhelming feeling of family and giving.
Best thing about December - the holiday spirit. For a short time, people seem kinder, happier, more giving. I am always hopeul that the spirit will last throughout the year. No matter what religion or nationality everyone seems somewhat united during the holiday season. I just love the spirit. Now this giveaway is a great example of the holiday spirit. I reallly love that Glacier colorway!
My fav thing about December is probably all the holiday lights. I love celebrating Christmas with my family, but that is only for a few days out of the month. So my favorite thing about the entire month would have to be all of the beautiful lights. I live in Central Indiana where winter days can be quite dreary, and so those Christmas lights are a sign of hope and cheer!
Although yummy yarn under my tree full of lights would be even better. :o)
Vacation Days are the best part of December!! Oh and family get-togethers. Like the one we had last weekend. Lots of food, lots of alcohol, lots of laughs. Good times. =)
The best thing about December is getting to see my loved ones that I might not see very much through the year; we all live so far away from each other. And to be together, to bless them with love, presents and homemade food and celebrate the birth of our Saviour is the best part of the year, let alone December!
oh, December is a wonderful month! it has the longest night (in the northern hemisphere) and then the days start to get longer. it's a time in almost all traditions where friend & family gather, good food is cooked & shared, stories are told, children are delighted by snowfall...
it's a cozy time, a time to take stock of the year past and to plan for the year ahead.
My favorite thing about December is getting together with extended family to celebrate Christmas. My mother has 7 siblings and I have LOTS of cousins. (We don't exchange gifts, thankfully!) But Christmas Eve has always been an evening of food and family and talking and seeing new babies and meeting new boyfriends/girlfriends etc. I don't see this side of my family too often, so Christmas is the most reliable time to catch up. I look forward to it every year.
I'm not a big winter fan, but I love the holidays! Eating good food, having the house smell like warm cookies day in and out.. yum! And also, just winding down on the year and thinking ahead to next year, getting excited about what the future will bring :o)
The best thing about December - I can't pick one! Friends and family together, gift giving, snuggling under a warm blanket with the lights off looking at the Christmas lights ... it's all good!
Everyone seems to make more of an effort to be nice.
If we go with 'what is so great about this December' I will have to go with November is over, as it was a completely difficult month, and I am one month away from seeing my husband again and having him home, safe and sound.
If we go with the 'great about December' in general, than I have to second what so many others have already said, it's the one time where no one questions you about putting family first. As a family, we really try to bring the focus of the holidays back to why we are celebrating what we are celebrating. The chance to slow down from all the activities and visit. With each other, our friends, our loved ones, and really talk about what life, love, and liberty means to each of us.
Plus, we get to eat cake, alot. (I like cake.) Especially birthday cake, when we celebrate Christ's birthday.
THanks for being so generous.
The very best part of December is snuggling in front of the Christmas tree with Ben and Ruger; soft Christmas music, dim lights and total peace.
This Christmas will be the first with Kaitlyn and I imagine that I will have a new favorite part of December once we have experienced the holidays through the eyes of a toddler once again.
I LOVE holiday decorations! Especially those chilly nights where I can get all snuggled up on my couch with a cup of hot tea and a knitting project. I just love how my house smells b/c of the Christmas tree and I love looking at the lights on the tree.
I also love that my son (he just turned 3) gets SO excited about anything to do with Christmas. Christmas morning this year is going to be fantastic! I cannot wait to see how excited my little boy is going to be when he sees all of the presents under the tree!
The best thing about December? Knitting, knitting, knitting! :)
My favorite part of December is how much closer everyone seems to get. How you can sit down with your significant other under a blanket with a cup of hot cocoa and watch the snow through the twinkle of the Christmas tree lights.
This is my first winter with a significant other. He plans to bring me to the city to see all the lights and walk the prettiest streets. He wants to take me sledding and build snowmen, things I haven't done since I was a kid. We plan to bake Xmas cookies to decorate as a family, maybe even string some popcorn for our feathery friends outside. December brings out the kid in us all. That's why December is the best, love and laughter and family.
I love holiday movies. Polar Express for the kids, A Christmas Story for me (it's a MAJOR AWARD) and It's A Wonderful Life for my husband and father-in-law. I love the feeling of cozy houses and fresh baked cookies. My son (5 yo) urgently informed me that we'd need to make cookies to leave out for Santa.
The excitement of the season is hard to pass up.
Oh, and the knitting.
I love the coziness of December. It's all about holing up in the house, cooking big pots of food, baking, curling up on the couch, knitting and just plain relaxing. Now that our daughter is 2 1/2, she is starting to get really excited about the holidays, and it is making this month even more special as she takes so much pleasure and joy from walking in the snow, pressing cookie cutters into dough and wishing for gifts to share with her baby brother.
I just really enjoyed reading everyone's comments.
Much love to everyone.
It seems like each December is different, with challenges and changes as we move into the new year. I really can't say what the best thing about December is...perhaps some warm, wise amalgamation of what everyone already said above.
Best Wishes!!
