TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

My favorite thing about December is how excited the kids get for Christmas and snow and visiting with Grandma.
December is for family and friends. Fun and food. Who can forget the food? It's for thankfulness and praise and humbled remembrance.
Handmade gifts, the element of surprise, the joy of giving.
I love everything about December. Wooly sweaters wrapped around me all the time. The hustle & bustle of the season. Jack frost snippin' at my nose. Christmas decorations and a beautiful sparkly tree in my living room. The reason for the season, the birth of my savior. :)
The BEST thing about Christmas for our family is celebrating Jesus' birthday and spending time with friends and family. It's the MOST wonderful time of the year!
The best thing about December is the cold weather. It's the perfect time to bring out those hand-knit sweaters, socks, hats, and mittens!
The very best thing about December for me is watching my children and grandchildren on Christmas morning. There is nothing like the eyes of a child when they first see that tree and those presents. Especially when they are just 3 and 4 years old as my two grandsons are now. Lucky for me, they live with me! along with their moms, my daughters. So not only did I get that pleasure when they were little I am getting it all over again with my grandsons. Second best is the weather. The snow and crispy air. I love how the snowfall muffles everything. It is truly the most wonderful time of the year. Merry Christmas!
The best thing about December for me is traditions. We have so many wonderful family traditions this time of year. It just kind of slows us down again and lets us be together more. I also love the snow. Here in Boston, we just git our first snowfall, with more predicted. Snow, fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate by the tree.......it doesn't get better than that!
Thanks!!
My favorite thing about December is having some time off, as I'm a college instructor. A blissful few weeks of no papers to grade and sleeping in!
December is such a special time for me and my family...I love everything about it. Christmas, family, shopping for loved ones, snow, holiday music, fun family excursions, lights, trees, reflecting on the past year and hope for the New Year to come.
Without question - travelling to Minnesota and Wisconsin to see my family!
I love christmas! I love decorating and baking and getting the whole family together. However..the very best thing about december is that my youngest was born in it..a year ago next week the light of my life came to be.
I love that December is so cold and dark that I don't feel guilty about spending the whole day next to the wood stove knitting and drinking hot chocolate!
I am not a lover of cold weather, but there are many things about December that I cherish: cozy sweaters and socks, time with family, evenings of knitting, cheerful dispositions from the public (I work in a public library), and being able to spot the birds (cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc.) more easily with the starkness of leafless branches.
The best thing about Christmas (aside from being with family) is the Christmas tree. A real one. That smells really good. I love taking the branches you trim off the bottom to get the tree in the stand and make wreaths and decorate them.
We hang the wreaths all over the house and where ever you go the smell of evergreen follows you... I love the smell.
My favorite thing about December is gathering around the Yule tree with my family and decorating it together. We reminisce about when and why we accumulated each special ornament, while we drink hot cocoa and listen to holiday music. It's like magic how warm and wonderfully close we all feel as we hang the ornaments, garland, and my now 17 year old son places the star on top every year. We remember family and friends who we have lost, and give thanks for all of those who are still with us. Throughout all of December a beautiful peace and togetherness reigns over our hearts. And it's cold enough to wear all the alpaca and wool items knitted up over the course of the past year!
There's no ONE best thing about December. It is a combined effect of many things. Who Jesus was (and is) and the feelings He inspires in us toward others. Family and friends. Preparations for festivities of all kinds. Lights and decorations. Shopping for people we love. Traditions and memories. Music that makes you feel warm and nostalgic and young (even if you get sick of "Mele Kalikimaka" after the hundredth time). The smells of pine, cinnamon, cookies baking. The fireplace. The gaiety and excitement of children. Falling snow and the stillness of night.
There is no one best thing about December. December is the best thing about all of us.
snow snOW SNOW :)
hmmm, actually way too many things to choose from. snow, Christmas lights, cookies, eggnog in my coffee, snow, baby #3's birthday, putting up birdfeeders for the winter, snow, the contagious excitement of kids, making chocolate for our advent calendar....snow...yarn giveaways... ;)
This one is hard...December is the month of my birthday, my wedding anniversary, and my son's birthday (he's turning one in 3 days!!). But I think my favorite thing about December is the utter stillness on a morning after a night of heavy snow. The crispness in the air, the snow still clinging to the trees, and being able to just cuddle up inside with a steaming cup of coffee and lap full of wool.
The best thing about December is watching my kids' level of anticipation grow with every day. They're also usually on their best behavior, which makes for a pleasant month.
December!!! It is the month we were married - 25 years ago on the 22nd! I LOVE celibrating it amongst the holiday spirit. I love the way that you are not thinking about Christmas during the year; and you know you should do Christmas shopping; but you just can't. The reason being because the essence of Christmas sinks into your soul on one very special day and there it is - the joy, the giving, my family / friends / the vibrations of the world as we all search for the "all I want is world peace," meaning of life. (I always think of Sandra Bullock and Miss Congeniality here!) Then, our hearts open up and we can revel in the all of the wonderful senses of the holiday season. Wheeee!
We love taking the kids out for a walk/drive to see all the lights followed by hot cocoa w/ marshmallows in our snowmen mugs.
Spending Christmas day with family opening presents and eating all day long.
Sitting on the couch under a duvet watching Christmas movies. The best thing? Family time.

Picture a dark, still evening. It's quiet. There's no wind. It's cold, but not too cold. Snow is falling - big fluffy flakes - and everything is blanketed in white. And the Christmas lights are on.
I live in Ottawa. We get a lot of snow. By March you think that if you never see another flake of snow you will die happy. But in December, the snow is new and fresh and it's not yet mind-numbingly cold outside. And so snow is good.
Normally I'd say the best thing about December is seeing all those people you only really see at the Holidays--friends and family who are usually too busy to get together, but who make it a priority at this time of year. We all come together in candlelight, huddle around fireplaces, dressed in our sparkliest clothes, drinking eggnog and cocoa, the air full of pine and cinnamon, braced against the early evening dark. Normally, that's the best thing.
This year, the best thing is all that, plus savoring my first pregnancy as it begins to wind toward that wonderful inevitable prize at the end, the firstborn son, eagerly awaited. I know that for the rest of my life I will look back and remember this December, remember the anticipation, remember the joyful waiting...
The best thing about December this year will be watching my daughter enjoy her first Christmas.
