TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

For me, December means the possibility of a snow day. We're supposed to have our first snow storm on Wednesday. 20-30 centimeters with high winds. Just the thought of an unplanned day off. No grading because you left it at school and it is CLOSED! Curling up with a book, looking out the window not being able to see a thing, so happy you can stay inside drinking hot chocolate wearing pjs all day, knowing no one can drop in because everyone's staying inside. The sound of the wind outside, cozy inside having a nap. I must go choose a book to read just in case!
The best thing about December? Getting to spend time with my niece and nephew, who live too far away.
Best thing about December: Christmas!!
The crisp air with a little chill is the best thing about December, the kind of chill that starts thoughts of mulled wine, warm cider, and baileys irish cream in hot chocolate! Yummy and warming!
Snow! Chiristmas trees! Chirstmas lights! Decorations! I love everything about December, in case you couldn't guess, lol. I especially love making woolly things for the ones I love best. Especially this year, since I am knitting a scarf for a very special someone. :)
Time off! Having a day or two off to spend time with family and being able to indulge in atypical, fun activities like Christmas light festivals or gingerbread house contests or Christmas/winter plays. Lots of good quality things to spend time together doing and building memories!
Honestly... this is my sons 2nd Christmas, and hes at that age where EVERYTHING is new and sparkly and magical. So to get to see that.... from the first snow, to a brand new pair of snow boots, or a new jacket... to trying to teach him about Christmas and trying to put up trees and ornaments. My brother is 23 and adores my son, and sneaks around the house when hes over talking in hushed voices about gifts like the boy understands or is even listening. Its brought out the magic back in December... So The best thing about December is watching it through a two year olds eyes... and watching others around him be affected
There is a lot of things I enjoy about this time of year. Everything from the smell of gingerbread, a big Christmas dinner with the family, decorating the tree, hot chocolate, even the rush of trying to get all those knitted gifts done in time.
And being that I am originally from Puerto Rico, I enjoy that Texas winter is not nearly as harsh/cold as places up north.... ^_^v
In December, after about three months of not seeing too many people, since everybody else sends their kids to school, we start to see everyone again--craft fairs, school concerts, gingerbread contests, holiday parties, pageants, it goes on and on. It's so good to see our neighbors!
The best thing about December (and the most entertaining) is that my boyfriend's birthday, Dec. 5th, is also the Day of the Ninja, giving him an excuse to turn his karate uniform into a ninja outfit and go wild!
December is too wonderful it's hard to pick just one thing. I'd have to say it's the holiday traditions. From family Christmas parties, to making cookies, holiday crafts, building puzzles, planning presents, and decorating the tree, sledding. December should be a whole month to celebrate Christmas that way you don't have to pack it all into too short of a time!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
The best thing about December is the music and the memories it evokes from my childhood.
The best thing about December is feeling the spirit of Christmas and appreciating all that we have, and helping those that do not have as much. December is all about LOVE!
This sounds silly, but my favorite thing about December is my dad's birthday on the 12th (drawing day!) It's an excuse to tell him how much I love him for his generosity, care, and humor.
Real snow and a fire in the fireplace. Reasons to wear all of my handknit socks!
My favorite part about is December are our family traditions. A trip to the tree farm (same one for 22 years), a evening out at the symphony (where I always cry) and a delicious meal after; hanging our stocking that were handknit for our entire family; my brother and I still grabbing pillows and rushing to the tree after Christmas Eve dinner and fighting later over who gets to put baby Jesus in the manger; my moms Christmas village; the first snow fall. All of these little things add up the Spirit of the Season to me; it fills my heart with love and joy; sometimes I wish December never ended
My favorite thing about December is the first snow, particularly when it happens at night. I live in the woods, and it's wonderful to walk around in falling snow in the middle of the night and have everything be completely silent.
Christmas lights! Christmas carols! Christmas ornaments! Christmas cookies! Christmas everything!!
My favorite thing about December is decorating the christmas tree and looking at all of the ornaments that we have colllected throughout the years.
My favorite thing about December is the quiet relief you feel after your last final exam...
The best thing about December (and winter in general) is that perfect time after a snowfall when everything is super pristine and peaceful. That feeling ends, however, when I have to shovel. It's worth it though!
The best thing about December is sitting around a warm fire, wrapped in homemade quilts, enjoying your time with the people you love. And my birthday ;-)
BEAUTIFUL colorways!
This feels a little like a fifth grade essay question, but I believe the best thing about December is the renewed belief in hope. One hopes to have wonderful gatherings with loved ones. One hopes to celebrate the end of a year, the beginning of a new one. One hopes to see snow, to hear the laughter of children, the joy of passing the gift of hope on to someone else. One hopes to celebrate health, happiness, peace, and love, preferably with some bubbly and baked goods.
One hopes to be happy and be loved.
However, this year, I only hope my son sees Christmas perfectly, from both eyes at the same time, preferably as both of my kids giggle while chasing each other around the Christmas tree.
The best thing about December is love. My husband was my first love in high school in 1977, only his father died suddenly and he worked jobs to help his mom and then went away to college. I never told him how I felt. I didn't see him for 30 years. But I never forgot him, or stopped loving him. Three decades later, I was beginning my life over. I decided to treat myself to a trip abroad for the first time in my life. While leaving, I took a bold step and called him. We decided to finally meet, and he'd take me to the airport the next day. When the taxi dropped me off at his door, it was as if the years had never been; I saw him and my heart knew. He was, and always will be--it, for me. He took me to the airport, and asked if he could pick me back up when I returned. He did, and we began dating. I came up for three weeks in December to stay with him. We fell hopelessly in love. It was my lifelong dream come true. December is our month--we sit on the sofa, watch the fire, cuddle, and feel as if--whatever else happens--and stuff does, as my husband just lost his job--we feel as though it's still all ok, because we have each other. At last.
Family, food, and fun...oh and I get to take out an ocassional scarf and pretend it's cold here in the Arizona desert ;)
