TIME’S UP! It’s the most wonderful time of the year giveaway!
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:17AM
I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They're all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it's time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We're giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that's what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it's in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you'll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it's more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I'm calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you'll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

The best thing about December is that things finally begin to slow down. I know that sounds odd, considering how busy the holidays usually are. But for me, our fall is always a very busy season with a lot of activities and running, but by December, after Thanksgiving is over, it feels like our calendar opens up, with fewer commitments and more free time to just relax. The fact that it is darker earlier and the house is warm and cosy and the Christmas lights are on, making me more than willing snuggle in and stay close to home, is an added benefit to that slowing down nature of the month!
best thing about december? eating wonderful baked goods without guilt! they're everywhere you go and no one can look at you with that "stop eating you fatty" look because it's holiday time! and everyone's enjoying cookies and breads and pies. mmmmmm pie.
The best thing... is the fact that there is winter break at the end of it! Hee hee... and of course, the fact that it gives me plenty of motivation to knit =)
Few things I like about December....it's the time of year I find new recipes to share with family and friends. I bake so it's usually cookies, cake or cupcakes. There's always a new favorite. I also like to mix drinks for get togethers....mulled wine, wassail and peppermint hot chocolate. I love the white lights and red ornaments on the Christmas tree. Mostly, this year I'm looking forward to watching my 2 year old son open his Christmas gift....a tricycle. Everytime we walk by the toy aisle where all the bikes are...he would get all excited and say, "Beep Beep. Beep Beep." I know this will be his favorite toy from Mommy and Daddy.
So many things are lovely about December, but most of all a sense of celebration culminating in Hannukah, Christmas and two family birthdays (one on the 26 and one the 27 and yes they get separate birthday gifts--no combining.)
The best thing about December is the Christmas trip with my husband. Usually we travel for conferences, so one person tied up much of the day. But our December trip is always just about travel and togetherness.
The best thing about December is the excuse to knit and crochet 24/7 cause you HAVE to finish the gifts! and then there are the happy faces on Christmas when they see that you took the time to make their gift.
The best thing about December is the time before Christmas. Although this time is stressfull too, due to year end in the company and thinking and making Christmas presents I love the lots of lights in the citys, which dispel the darkness. And I love the Christmas fairs here in Bremen (Northern Germany), both are so beautiful on their own way.
My favourite thing about december is actually the few days after Christmas when the winter solstice has also passed and you notice the days getting longer again.
Mince pies are pretty good too!
The very best thing is the night sky in the pre-dawn hours. When I leave the house at 6, it's full of constellations.
My favorite thing about December is the feeling of expectation... I love the excitement that surrounds waiting for the first snow fall, and the anticipation of spending a lovely Christmas morning with my family, seeing their faces as they open the gifts I have made with love.
The best thing about December is getting to spend time with my family. We're a no-muss, no-fuss kind of crowd, and Christmas is always a great time to just be family - with gifts, of course. ;)
Although now that I'm knitting (just started in July), I'm really loving making things to keep myself and my husband warm, so pretty soon one of my favourite things about December will be the opportunity to wear handknits!!
I love December because it is the one month of the year here in Texas that we can be guaranteed NOT to wake up to 90+ degree weather :D
The weather in AZ finally cools down, so we can snuggle a bit more and drink hot tea or cocoa. Their is mischief in the air and so many fun family times.
December really gets the kid's excited for Christmas. I love how they just can't wait. This year I've been writing the Christmas countdown on their lunches so they are just busting with excitement. Only December can do that!
All the colours are exquisite! Marvellous.
The best thing about Christmas? The spirit of giving and delicious secrets that pervades the house. The way that making our presents makes us more eager to give than to receive.
December is filled with many happy memories and current joys for me. It's about birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper (on the 23rd); remembering how my Mom always made sure that my brother and I had our own birthday cakes (his is on the 24th) in the midst of all her Christmas baking and candy making; getting to pick what I wanted for my birthday dinner (Mom's tamale pie with extra olives);and not having to do the dishes after my birthday dinner. Some of my favorite people share this birthday month...my nephew Jess, who's made 13 tours to the Middle East...my oldest niece Kam, who was born when I was 2...my dear friend Carol, who's been there for me through thick and thin for over 20 years...and my aforementioned brother Jeff, who is the kindest, most patient and thoughtful person I know.
As for current joys, our first granddaughter was born last Thursday...Adelyn Grace...I will be in NYC one week from today to hold her for the first time, and that will be the best thing about my December for 2009!
Choosing one favorite thing is like choosing one favorite colorway - impossible! ;)
To me, Christmastime means more time with family and friends, especially since my DH and my sister have a birthday near Christmas. I especially love the joy I see in my kids' faces. I love exchanging cards, I love the festivities and kids' Christmas programs, I love caroling and Christmas Eve service, I love the food that we only have at this time; fudge, peppermint bark, eggnog, mmmmm.....
Merry Christmas, Yarnista!! I wish you at least one "real" snow, like you remember!
I love to see my dogs (4) Corgis playing in the snow and then how they love having me rub their bellys with a towel afterwards. Merry Christmas to Yarnista! You have the most beautiful blog I have ever seen, both the pictures and the sentiments.
The best thing about December is getting a break from work for the holidays to spend time with family! It's so nice to have several days of time just to be with my husband and children and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the year.
What a wonderful giveaway - thank you so much for sharing!
My favorite thing about December? Well, I work in retail, and have for 10 years now, so the bulk of December for me means 60 hour weeks and lots of hustle and bustle. So my favorite part of December is the week between Christmas and New Years, when everything slows down and I can finally enjoy the season!
My favorite part about December is how much nicer people are to each other during the holidays.
I'm going to be selfish and say that my favorite thing about December is that my birthday happens. I also love the holiday season. In recent years, I've tried very hard to re-capture that child-like excitement for this time of the year. I bake cookies, decorate a little tree, mail cards and drink cocoa while staring at the pretty lights. Plus I celebrate my bday, so I am just LOVING this time of year!
The best thing about December is driving at night and seeing all the houses lit up!
The best thing about December is that I get to celebrate the births of 4 very important people: Jesus Christ, my son, my daughter, and myself.
